This adventure combines the spectacular Chopta–Chandrashila trek with an exciting multi-day Ganga river rafting expedition. Beginning in Rishikesh, the journey takes you through the scenic valleys of Garhwal, past the confluence at Devprayag, to the beautiful alpine landscapes of Chopta and the summit of Chandrashila. After the trek, the adventure continues on the Ganga with several days of rafting, riverside camping, swimming, body surfing and navigating exciting  rapids. It is an ideal combination of Himalayan trekking, river adventure and wilderness camping.

  • We will transport all your belongings for you so that you only have to carry your day pack with camera, water bottle and jacket.
  • We serve three meals a day including snacks and drinks. We provide a variety of tasty healthy food including Indian, Chinese and Western meals with lots of vegetables and fruit.

Itinerary

Day 01: Drive from Rishikesh to Baniyakund / Chopta: 

Drive: 6–7 hours | Altitude: Rishikesh 400 m to Baniyakund 2,400 m | Overnight: Baniyakund

After breakfast, depart from Rishikesh for Baniyakund near Chopta. The scenic drive follows the valleys of the Ganga, Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers, passing through some of the most beautiful landscapes of Garhwal.

En route, stop at Devprayag, the historic town where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers meet to form the holy Ganges. Continue through the mountain valleys and picturesque villages towards Chopta.

On arrival at Baniyakund, check into the camp and relax amidst the peaceful Himalayan surroundings.

Day 02: Baniyakund – Tungnath – Chandrashila – Baniyakund

Trek: 4–5 hours | Chandrashila: 3,690 m | Overnight: Baniyakund

Start early in the morning for the trek towards Tungnath and Chandrashila, allowing enough time to reach the summit for the spectacular Himalayan panorama.

The trail gradually climbs through beautiful forests dominated by dwarf rhododendrons and alpine vegetation. From Tungnath, continue towards Chandrashila, the summit offering one of the finest viewpoints in the Garhwal Himalayas.

On a clear day, magnificent peaks including Nanda Devi (7,817 m), Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, Trishul and Bandarpunch can be seen from the summit.

Spend some time enjoying the panoramic views before descending along the same trail to Baniyakund.

Day 03: Baniyakund – Deoriatal – Devprayag – Rafting Camp at Byas Ghat

Trek & Drive: 6–7 hours | Rafting: Approx. 2½ hours | Overnight: Riverside Camp

After breakfast, drive to Sari Village, the starting point of the trek to the beautiful Deoriatal Lake.

The trail climbs steeply through dense forest and opens up to wonderful views of the surrounding Himalayan villages and mountains. Spend some time at Deoriatal enjoying the peaceful setting and taking photographs before trekking back to Sari.

Continue the drive towards Devprayag, where you meet the rafting guides and the rest of the Red Chilli Adventure river team. After a safety briefing and rafting preparations, begin your first day on the Ganga. The rafting section is relatively relaxed, with a few enjoyable rapids. There will be plenty of opportunities for swimming, body surfing, relaxing on the river and enjoying the surrounding wilderness. Keep an eye out for birds and other wildlife along the riverbanks.

After approximately 2½ hours on the river, reach the riverside beach camp at Byas Ghat.

Day 04: Raft from Byas Ghat to Kodiyala

Rafting: Approx. 30 km | Overnight: Riverside Beach Camp

After breakfast, continue downstream towards Kodiyala.

This is another enjoyable day on the river, with a combination of gentle stretches and exciting rapids. The changing landscape, forested hills and sandy river beaches make this section particularly scenic.

After covering approximately 30 km on the Ganga, arrive at the riverside beach camp near Kodiyala. Relax by the river and enjoy the evening around camp.

Day 05: Raft from Kodiyala to Rishikesh

Rafting: Approx. 35 km | Trip ends in Rishikesh

Today is the most exciting rafting day of the expedition. The Kodiyala section is renowned for its challenging white-water and a series of exciting Grade III rapids.

After an early start, paddle through rapids such as Daniel’s Dip, The Wall, Three Blind Mice, Crossfire and Body Surfing Rapid, depending on river conditions and the route operated that day.

Continue downstream towards Rishikesh, with the river becoming progressively more exciting. After lunch, tackle some of the classic rapids of the lower Ganga, including Roller Coaster and Golf Course, before completing the rafting expedition.

The adventure concludes in Rishikesh, where you bid farewell to the river and the Red Chilli Adventure team.
